Episode 84 - Unlocking Your Inner Guidance System: How to Recognize and Trust Your Intuition
Intuition brings clarity and confidence to everyday decisions, helping you recognize what's best for you while moving through life with less second-guessing. We explore how intuition manifests from subtle gut feelings to clairvoyance, providing practical guidance on developing this inner wisdom.
• Intuition requires a still mind since it's something we receive, not force
• Regular meditation clears mental channels and exponentially increases intuitive connection
• Body awareness helps recognize intuitive signals through physical sensations
• Start developing intuition with small, inconsequential decisions before tackling major life choices
• Trust is essential—sometimes you won't understand why intuition guides you a certain way
• The "clairs" represent different ways intuition communicates: knowing (claircognizance), hearing (clairaudience), feeling (clairsentience), and seeing (clairvoyance)
• Intuition typically arrives without emotional charge, distinguishing it from fear-based thinking
• Practice after meditation with simple yes/no questions that carry no emotional weight
• Journal your experiences to recognize patterns in how intuition speaks to you personally

This week we are diving into intuition, that inner guidance system that can bring clarity, confidence and ease to your everyday life. From deciding what to eat for breakfast to making your next career move, intuition helps you know what's best for you and move through life with less second guessing. Today we are exploring how intuition shows up, from gentle nudges to the extremes of clairvoyance, so you can start recognizing it in your own life. Welcome back to Roots of the Rise with me, sarah Hope. Last episode we laid the foundation what intuition is and the different ways to think about it. If you missed it, I recommend going back and giving it a listen before continuing here. Today we're going deeper into how to receive intuition so you can start tuning into your own inner guidance system with clarity and confidence. Quick note before we dive in there is no way I can cover every detail of receiving intuition in a short episode format like this, so think of this episode as a primer, giving you the essential basics to start noticing and trusting your inner guidance.
Speaker 1:First, let's go over some key elements of being able to receive intuition. Number one still, the mind. Intuition is passive. It's something you receive, not force. A settled mind is essential. This is why meditation is so valuable. It clears the channel. Learning the difference between your mind creating information and receiving information is part of this, and it's critical. Many people don't even know what it feels like for their mind to be settled. If your thoughts are constantly on a hamster wheel, intuitive hits have a really hard time coming through. Which brings me to point number two, which is meditation. You know, beyond stilling the mind, meditation helps clear out stressors, limiting beliefs, patterns that distort intuition. It connects us to subtle feeling states, which is key because intuition often whispers. It's not that you have to be meditating in order to become intuitive or for your intuitive abilities to grow, but regular meditation can exponentially increase your connection to your higher self. And I cannot stress enough the importance of the purification piece. Purifying your mental and energy systems is essential for accurately interpreting the messages that come through. More on that next episode. All right.
Speaker 1:Number three practice body awareness. Cindy Dale and many others teach that intuition is often body-based. You might get a gut feeling, a sense of expansion or constriction, warmth in your chest or tension somewhere. All of these are signals that your intuition is speaking before your mind even recognizes it. Mindfulness and tuning into these bodily cues is a powerful skill when developing intuition. Skill when developing intuition. Next up number four practice following intuitive hits. Intuition is a skill you can develop, but it requires practice and experimentation. Meditation helps create the receptivity, but you also need to act on the intuitive hits you receive. The more you honor these signals, the more reliable they become.
Speaker 1:I think there's a misconception out there that intuition is only really useful in the like quote, unquote big moments. Do I take this job or stay at my current one? Do I move across country, get a divorce? But the real benefit and beauty of intuition is in the everyday. Just imagine for a moment a life in which deciding what task to do next was as simple as tuning into this inner guidance system, where overwhelm is a rare feeling because you have the skill of asking your gut what's called for in the moment. Imagine never second guessing yourself because you know your actions, even the small ones, are deeply aligned with the life you want to live.
Speaker 1:Our facility with our intuition is developed in the little moments. You know we don't get those big decisions all that often. It's a little like going hiking. You know you don't want to jump right into hiking a 4,000 footer, you want to practice a little like going hiking. You know you don't want to jump right into hiking a 4,000 footer, you want to practice a little first. You've got to build up to that. You don't want to run a marathon before you have like trained for some 5Ks. I mean, some people do. But you know, I think it's better to start small. That's why I'm always saying, like with big emotional patterns or dysfunctional programs that we have things that we're really struggling with, you don't want to start with a Mount Everest, like you're just not prepped for it. And it's the same thing with intuition. We want to start with things that aren't a big deal, because then there's no pressure involved. Another cup of coffee or a glass of water, do the next project, or take 30 to exercise. You know, even creating better relationships, being open to getting that hit that maybe you should check in on your best friend. So don't start with the big questions, start small. I'll give some more pointers at the end of this episode and finally, point number five trust. Trust is essential.
Speaker 1:Too often we doubt our intuition, and understandably so. Sometimes it nudges us in ways that don't make sense in the moment, like why would you be guided to clean the house before going grocery shopping. A client of mine received a nudge to take a different route home than she normally took. In the moment these decisions seem totally inconsequential. What difference does it make which tour you do first or which route home you take? Sometimes the purpose of intuitive guidance is clear in the moment. Other times you may never fully know why a particular action is aligning you with your highest good. Occasionally, clarity comes later. In this client's case, she ended up with a speeding ticket. Had she followed the intuition, she would have avoided it entirely. But the salient point here is that if she had done what her intuition had prompted her to do, gone the other route, she never would have known the reason was so that she avoided a speeding ticket. The takeaway is that you just have to trust. Sometimes the reason will become obvious and sometimes it won't, but that doesn't mean the guidance wasn't real or meaningful.
Speaker 1:One quick but important point here Remember that intuition is just one data point. You need to combine it with your mental and emotional input as well, especially in the beginning, because as you are learning, as you are developing this skill, you might get it wrong. You might misinterpret what's coming through. That's one of the reasons why it is so important to start with inconsequential things. A quick double check you can do is to ask yourself is there harm in following this guidance? If not, go ahead, experiment and see what happens. This is not the same as doubting. This is asking for confirmation, which is something you would do in pretty much any scenario when you wanna make sure that you're getting it right. More on this and other cautionary notes next episode, so definitely tune in for that.
Speaker 1:Okay, now that we've covered the foundations of receiving intuition so stilling the mind, practicing body awareness, following the hits and cultivating trust let's explore how intuition can actually show up in your life. This is where the clairs come. In the different ways our intuitive senses can communicate messages to us, from subtle feelings to clear visions. Understanding the clairs can help you recognize which signals are coming from your intuition so you can act with even more clarity, clairs, right and confidence. So first let me just acknowledge that the clairs clairvoyance being the most well known term can sound a little woo-woo, like a little out there a little questionable. Can sound a little woo-woo, like a little out there, a little questionable. You might have like a gut reaction of like ugh, like no, no, that's too far. You know, I felt that way myself before. I spent the last decade cultivating them in my own life and in my practice. You know they're not as wild as you might think.
Speaker 1:Again, skeptics be skeptical, like, just think of this as a thought experiment. But do keep in mind we know quantum physics is real. There are legitimate studies showing that energy radiates from energy healers hands, for instance. If you have ever had a craniosacral appointment or a Reiki therapy session, maybe you even experienced this, where you felt your body heating up or the hands of your practitioner heating up. Maybe you've actually had that felt experience.
Speaker 1:When we talk about the clairs, we're really talking about the ability to perceive energy in different ways. Some people have simply become adept at sensing energy that isn't visible to the naked eye. You do this too Anytime you read someone and sense they need space or need a hug that you should back off. You are perceiving energy without seeing it. That's all the Claires are.
Speaker 1:So let's start with claircognizance, a clear knowing. This is a sudden insight or knowledge that comes without logical explanation From a scientific perspective. It's very similar to how Kahneman and Klein define intuition. It's information arriving directly as truth. Next is clairaudience, or clear hearing. This is perceiving words, sounds or messages beyond the physical ear. You might hear those messages in your own voice or someone else's. As Cindy Dale says, yes, there is a difference between being psychic and psychotic. You know. Intuitive voices are always positive and helpful, not dictatorial, mean or judgmental. You also might hear music or drumming even if no one is playing an instrument. Or you might hear many instruments while only one is being actively played. That's another example of clairaudience.
Speaker 1:Next up we've got clairsentience, or clairempathy, and that's feeling the truth about another person, experiencing another person's emotions or energy or physical sensations that are not your own. That gut feeling that someone isn't doing well and could really use a hug that's clairsentience. You're picking up on their emotional energy field. Or if you've ever walked into a room and have known that you walked in on two people fighting, for instance, you're picking up on their energy. In sessions with clients I often notice sensations in my own body that reflect their blocked emotions or experience. So I might be doing a reading of the chakras and when I get to their throat, mine clamps down and I might begin coughing. Inevitably they share that. They've had a hard time speaking up for themselves or they spent their childhood keeping their mouth shut in order to stay safe, even though they were raging inside.
Speaker 1:Next we've got clairvoyance, which is perceiving information as images, symbols or movie-like sequences. If you have ever dreamed vividly, you know what this feels like watching something unfold visually. There are also lesser neural clairs. So clairalliance, which is smelling sense without a source. Clairagency receiving information through touch of an object, person or place, and I'm not sure about the pronunciation. Clairgustance, which is tasting something without consuming it. These are not as common, but they are out there. So let's sum everything up, do a quick review.
Speaker 1:For most people, intuition is subtle rather than dramatic. It's not like a bullhorn shouting instructions at you in a long run-on sentence. Often it shows up as a single word, a short phrase or a gentle physical sensation. It is a whisper rather than a shout. Right, it's that subtle gut feeling, a sense of expansion or contraction, getting chills or tingles or feeling a warmth in the chest. Pay attention to these physical signals, as well as subtle voices, visions, symbols or sudden moments of clarity that come without emotion. Actually side note feeling a deep emotional response is somewhat of a red flag. Usually, intuition comes without emotion because the divine doesn't judge. There's no right or wrong. There's no. Should you just make a choice, and that choice will have ripple effects, big or small. That's definitely something to explore deeper some other day.
Speaker 1:So back on topic. For now, body awareness is important. Creating stillness is also important. It gives you room to receive intuition. Meditation is one of the best ways to do this and it will not only help your hamster wheel of a mind quiet down, but also help you let go of dysfunctional patterns and beliefs that might be tainting the quality of your intuition. And, of course, the more you notice and practice tuning in, the more fluent you become at recognizing and trusting these intuitive messages. Remember, you may or may not understand immediately why you're getting what you're getting. Often the meaning becomes clearer after meditation or journaling, some sort of reflection. Remember, intuition is receptive. You must go into passive mode to receive guidance from your higher self or higher vibrational sources, which is a topic for another day. But it's also okay to actively inquire when clarification is needed, to ask questions, and the more you ask the better you're going to understand what's coming through. So ask the questions, get responses and continue the dialogue until you feel deep understanding.
Speaker 1:If you want to begin working with your intuition. Here's a place to start. First of all, do not go out there and spend thousands of dollars on an intuition course. Those classes are out there and some of them might be really great, but they also put a lot of pressure on you to get it right. If you spend thousands of dollars, then there's all this pressure of like I spent all this money, I really need to do this and learn this. Don't do that to yourself. How about just, like, have some fun and play around with it first?
Speaker 1:So the first step is just to think of a time that you got an intuitive hit and you followed it. You know how did it feel different from a random thought Like how did you know that this was an intuition, that this was an intuitive hit? That difference is your starting point. That difference is something that you really want to highlight for yourself. So the best thing you can do really is put out a list of the times that you've had some sort of intuitive hit, that gut feeling, that deep inner knowing of what action to take, how to respond to something, whatever it is, and then try to discern, okay, what was different about that, like what made it so powerful? How did. I know that that was intuition. And then second thing if you really want to work with intuition, as I've been saying, you have to practice. So it's best to do it right after meditation.
Speaker 1:Important to ask simple yes or no either, or questions with zero emotional weight at the beginning. Phrase them carefully no shoulds or supposed tos. But would it be in my highest good too? So not, should I quit my job? But would it be in my highest good to eat eggs or oatmeal for breakfast? Or would it be best for me to walk the dog right now? You want to build trust without pressure. Pay attention to the subtle nudges, the gut feelings, the body sensations or the inner words you hear, and note them. Really good to journal.
Speaker 1:After you do this, if you're going to start playing with it, the body often speaks before the mind understands. By tuning in, you start to recognize patterns and how intuition communicates with you personally. Intuition communicates with you personally, whatever the form. The more you notice and practice tuning in, the more fluent you become at recognizing and trusting those intuitive messages. And as you do this, just again remember that intuition is both receptive and interactive. So be open to receiving the guidance, but don't be afraid to keep asking questions. If what you get is unclear, ask for that clarification, request another perspective or simply observe until the meaning becomes evident Over time.
Speaker 1:This back and forth builds fluency and trust in your own inner guidance system. And remember also you don't have to follow what you get right. And remember also you don't have to follow what you get right. So if you get a hit and you don't like what you've gotten, you are under no obligation to do that thing. So I mean, even with simple stuff like okay, you get the hit, that I'm okay, eggs or oatmeal, oatmeal, I don't want oatmeal, I don't want to eat oatmeal this morning. That's not what I'm in the mood for. I want the eggs? Well then, have the eggs. You don't have to follow the guidance. You're not going to shoot yourself in the foot. You're not going to ruin your intuition forever if you don't Just be very conscious of the decision you are making and tell yourself okay, I understand, I got a hit that oatmeal would be better for me than eggs this morning, but I really don't want to follow that hit.
Speaker 1:So I'm going to acknowledge it. I'm going to write down all the reasons why I know that that is intuition, but I'm also going to choose not to pay attention right now. You can do that free will. That said, with practice following your intuition, even the quietest whispers of intuition become a reliable compass. They help you make choices that align with your highest self and bring more ease, clarity and confidence into everyday life. The more you observe and act on the small hits, the more confident you will become in your intuitive capacity. That's a lot to take in for today, but I hope it gives you a clearer sense of how intuition can show up in your life, from subtle gut feelings to flashy experiences of the clairs. Remember, connecting with your intuition isn't just about seeing the future or mystical experiences. It's about living a life more aligned with your true self, making choices with clarity and moving through life with more ease and confidence.
Speaker 1:Next episode is really important because we're going to be covering what to watch out for, how biases, past experiences and common pitfalls can get in the way of trusting your inner guidance. For now, notice how your intuition whispers at you this week. Try following one small nudge and see what happens.
